2012 BENJAMIN MOORE COMMUNITY RESTORATION PROGRAM

Application Guidelines

Working with Community Foundations of Canada, Benjamin Moore & Co., Limited is offering grants of cash and paint to support heritage restoration and community projects in Canada. Benjamin Moore has partnered with Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) in order to access CFC’s grantmaking experience and its national network of local community foundations.

A total of $24,000 in cash grants is available in each of Benjamin Moore’s three regions, focused in specific communities. The communities change from year to year. For 2012 grants, the focus communities are:

· Western Market: Victoria, BC; Mission, BC; Banff, AB; Canmore, AB; Swift Current, SK

· Central Market: Brandon, MB; Minnedosa, MB; St. Catharines, ON; Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON; Hamilton, ON; Aurora, ON

· Eastern Market: Ottawa, ON; Jonquière/Saguenay, QC; Québec, QC; St. Stephen/Fundy, NB

Charitable organizations in the communities mentioned above are invited to apply to Benjamin Moore Community Restoration Program by March 30^th, if their project meets the criteria below. Projects outside the target communities may also apply, but will receive lower priority in the selection process.

Successful projects will receive donated Benjamin Moore paint (up to a retail value of $750), colour expertise, and a cash grant of up to $4,000. The cash grant may be used in the renovation project, or for other program expenses that you describe in your application.

Projects supported in the past range from restoration of a small museum, to renovation of a youth centre, to refurbishing rooms in a women’s shelter, to contributing to a cutting-edge seniors’ residential complex, and restoring one of Canada’s original post offices.

Project Criteria:

· The applicant organization is a registered Canadian charity or is sponsored by a municipality.

· The project is a renovation project or heritage restoration project that benefits the local community and involves the use of paint.

· Volunteers from the local community are engaged in the project.

· The project is willing to involve a local Benjamin Moore retailer for product expertise and other support.

· The project is willing to participate in local public relations activities to publicize the program and Benjamin Moore's participation.

Application Instructions:

§ Fill out the PDF “2012 Benjamin Moore Application Form” (available on the National Programs page at www.cfc-fcc.ca) and send it by email, with “Benjamin Moore application” in the subject line of your email, to: info@cfc-fcc.ca

§ In addition to the application form, please attach:

§ a copy of your project budget, including revenue and expenses

§ current financial statements for your organization (audited, if available)

§ a list of your organization's leadership

§ If you have pictures of your project, feel free to include them.

Notification:

All submissions will be acknowledged when received, and applicants will be notified of the outcome of the review after the review process is completed. Applications are received and reviewed by Community Foundations of Canada, on behalf of Benjamin Moore & Co., Limited. Final decisions regarding the allocation of funds are made by Benjamin Moore representatives with input from CFC.

Completion of Project and Reporting Requirement:

If your project receives a Benjamin Moore Community Restoration Program grant, you should pick up your paint and complete your project by the end of 2012. You are expected to submit a brief report (1 to 2 pages) as soon as possible after your project is completed.

During the two days after his address to the 17^th General Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) at UNESCO headquarters in Paris Prof Robert Shipley was approached by many delegates at the conference. Overwhelmingly they agreed with him that the importance of heritage resources cannot be measured in economic terms alone. They have their own cultural value separate from the purely financial. James Rebanks, a UK based heritage consultant, went as far as to say that it is time for conservationists to push back and reject the economic concept of the “bottom line” as the only measure for public policy.

Speaking to the 17^th General Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Paris, Conference Chairperson Benjamin Mouton quoted Claude Levis-Strauss who said that “development” has had many more shipwreck victims than passengers. The message was clear that the heritage conservation movement must beware of those promising economic returns in exchange for compromising cultural resources. The General Assembly was attended by Prof Robert Shipley, Director of the Heritage Resources Centre.

Professor Robert Shipley, Director of the Heritage Resources Centre, spoke Tuesday to the 17^th General Assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Dr. Shipley addressed over 200 representatives from dozens of countries around the world. Research carried out by the Heritage Resources Centre was the topic. His paper was one of a small number selected from over 500 submissions to the conference.

This workshop will focus on Ontario’s architectural styles. We will learn how to identify a wide variety of styles and distinguish which features (character-defining elements) are important to each style. Using our gained knowledge we will examine one of Oakville’s neighbourhoods to determine the local styles, as well as use examples from participant’s own neighbourhoods.

The workshop fee for practicing planners and other concerned citizens will be $225.This price will include lunch and snacks on both days of the workshop.

An “ACO on the Go” Living History Event

Sunday October 23rd 2011 – 10am-3:30pm

Back by popular demand, the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario – Clarington Branch (ACO Clarington) is pleased to provide an opportunity to go back in time and hear the stories of life in the Prisoner of War Camp 30. The 75 minute tour will be lead by a “Camp 30 expert” and will include stops at various buildings to watch vignettes performed by talented re-enactors portraying the different aspects of Camp 30 life.

The event is a fundraiser for the formation of a foundation to preserve Camp 30, Canada’s last remaining intact POW camp. Money raised from the tickets sales and merchandise purchases will go towards creating a business case study in an effort to attract businesses to the site.

Tickets will be available by walk-in at the Clarington Museums and Archives – Sarah Jane Williams Heritage Centre (62 Temperance St. Bowmanville) or by phone at (905)-623-2734. Tickets cost $15.00 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. Tours start at 10 AM and run throughout the day. CALL NOW to book your spot for this exciting journey back into time.

What is Culture Days?

According to the website it is "... a collaborative pan-Canadian volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility,participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities." During September 30 to October 2 events are happing all across Canada and include "...free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate “behind the scenes,” to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, and designers at work in their community"

Ontario Old Mills

This week the Heritage Resoruces Centre got an e-mail asking for examples of sucessful adaptive reuses of old mills in Ontario. I thought I would share our answer to the e-mail:

The Landmark Group has several successful restaurants in old mills, including the Ancaster Old Mill, The Elora Mill the Cambridge Old Mill.

Toronto also has a restaurant and spa in their old mill while the Alton Mill has been turned into an arts centre.

Heritage Canada Foundation Releases 2011 Top Ten Endangered Places and Worst Losses Lists

OTTAWA, ON – September 2, 2011 - The Heritage Canada Foundation (HCF) has released its Top Ten Endangered Places and Worst Losses Lists drawing attention to a total of 13 architectural and heritage sites in Canada either threatened with demolition or already lost.

The Top Ten Endangered Places List, compiled from nominations received as well as from news items that HCF has been following and reporting on throughout the year includes:

• Bank of Montreal Building, Edmonton—a prominent modernist gem heading for landfill

• Civic Centre, Moose Jaw, Sask.—award-winning hockey arena facing demolition if new use not found

• Brighton Public School, Brighton, Ont.—a solid historic brick building on school board’s chopping block

• Cockshutt Office and Timekeeper’s Building, Brantford, Ont.—time is running out on designated heritage buildings part of the once thriving industrial heart of the city.

Telling Stories About Heritage - Using Narrative to Build Public Support

Description: Heritage is not just bricks and mortar and artifacts. Heritage professionals and the public understand these material objects in the context of multiple stories about them. The professional view is based in disciplines such as history, heritage restoration, and urban planning, but this is not necessarily the way that non-professionals experience heritage in their communities. Each heritage property or streetscape carries its own set of stories, developed over many years, and these stories help to determine how heritage is perceived and, more importantly, treated, by particular municipalities. We can use these stories as part of our evaluation of "cultural heritage value" as outlined in the Provincial Policy Statement.

This workshop begins by looking at how a traditional storytelling form—the novel—presents the heritage of Paris, Ontario. John Bemrose's The Island Walkers provides a jumping off point for examining how much more informal narratives, such as blogs, videos, and local lore, contribute to stories about places. Participants will explore strategies for identifying existing stories about heritage in their communities, as well as techniques for using stories to engage the public and create support for heritage preservation projects.

Goderich’s Main Square and West Street are Heritage Conservation Districts, and they have another 23 properties that are designated. Over 60 properties have been listed as significant sites, and the Goderich Harbour has been identified as a potential Cultural Heritage Landscape. Goderich is dubbed “Canada’s Prettiest Town” but due to the recent tornado much of the built heritage that contributes to that name is in danger. The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario is raising funds to help save Goderich’s heritage buildings. The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario is currently figuring out what our response should be, starting with raising funds to help the town, providing expert heritage consulting services through our Preservation Works program and other actions. All funds raised in this campaign will be directed to Goderich activities and assistance. We are seeking nominations for the 2011 ACO Provincial Awards. The purpose of the awards is to honour preservation leaders and/or projects tht are considered valuable on a provicial scale to the architectural conservation movement in Ontario.

This year's awards include:

(1) A. K. (Alice King) Sculthorpe Award for Advocacy This award recognizes an individual, an informal group or an established non-profit organization that at a critical point achieved exemplary success in solving a significant heritage crisis. The people involved have demonstrated leadership in the field, integrity and the ability to be inclusive and communicate the value of heritage conservation to others.

(2) Eric Arthur Lifetime Achievement Award This award recognizes individuals or groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the heritage conservation movement in Ontario over a sustained period of time. The state of the Province’s architectural heritage today would not be the same without the significant activities of this nominee.

(3) Peter Stokes Restoration Award: This award recognizes those responsible for the exemplary restoration of significant heritage structures, undertaken in accordance with the accepted polices and practices of heritage conservation in Ontario.

(4) Margaret and Nicholas Hill Cultural Heritage Landscape Award: This award recognizes individuals or groups and their projects that have led to a heightened level of awareness and appreciation of Ontario’s significant landscapes.

(5) Paul Oberman Award for Special Contributions: This award recognizes ACO members who have made a significant contribution to forwarding the goals of the provincial organization.

Goderich: Tour of "The Ridge" - August 28th

For anyone who is interested in heritage, this is a MUST SEE! The "Ridge" is an absolutely stunning home nestled high on the north bank of the Maitland River overlooking the Port of Goderich.

The view alone is worth the price of the ticket, although there is so much more to the tour. Get yours now before they're gone!

The following is an update of previously circulated info:

Please help us correct some mis-information just erroneously published:
1. "The Ridge" house (ca. 1828) tours of the Homan residence are, in fact, ONE HOUR TOURS
- plus additional time in the gardens, time for refreshments (included in the ticket price)
- even a 1928 video & a plethora of maps and photos in the carriage house following the guided tour.

Tours will commence every 15 minutes - on an advance ticket, reserved time basis. There are four guides that will help you through your visit, each in vintage costumes for the era being presented. Each tour group will consist of only 12 persons, to ensure that your time is personalized as much as possible.

Tickets are $50 per person; only 300 tickets can be sold to accommodate everyone comfortably. They are available in Goderich at the following businesses Huronia on Suncoast Drive as well as Banter, MacEwan & Feagan Insurance on South Street.

Keith has also collated a detailed & colourful history of this property that offers an illustrated overview of the fascinating story of "The Ridge" beginning with its 1828 origins under Baron de Tulye and the successor families that have lived there. Books will be available for purchase at a special reduced price at the tour.
All proceeds from the tour are dedicated to support the restoration of the COLBORNE CEMETERY GATES and "THE WALK IN THE PAST" events for students of Colborne PS, as scheduled for September.

Reg, a County employee at the Goderich Public Library, has collated an extensive history of Dr. William "Tiger" Dunlop and his planned town site "Gairbraid".

Much new and informative detail about Dunlop, founder of Goderich, and his chosen estate location, is presented on these new illustrated plaques in the parkette surrounding the walled tomb of the Dunlop brothers, Robert's wife Louisa, and her McColl relatives.
Access to the Tomb site is from River Ridge Crescent, (formerly Tomb Road). Reg will be on site from noon until 4pm for those who wish to stop by.

Cotswolds Study Trip - Day 5

The first stop of the day was is Witney where we met with the West Oxford Tourism

officer, to see the wool trail.

Our second stop was in Burford. Burford has been a town since it was granted a

charter between 1088 and 1107. We walked along Burford High Street, which is quite steep, with one of the town’s officials.

In the afternoon we visited Blenheim Palace, a gift from Queen Victoria to the Duke of Marlborough, for his great victory in the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. The architecture is impressive, as was the extensive landscaped grounds, which were designed by Capability Brown.

Cotswolds Study Trip - Day 4

The fourth day we spent all in one place, Bath. Once we arrived we went into the Roman Bath for a few hours. The museum displays one of the main baths in the centre with several hot and cold rooms and smaller baths around the periphery. Also displayed are Roman elements from the town that surrounds the baths including information and artifacts related to houses and burials.

After the baths, the group met to walk up the Assembly Rooms famous in Jane’s Austin’s books, as well as the Circus and Royal Crescent. The walk back to the bus took us past the Abby and the new baths (aka spa) that has opened.

Study Trip to the Cotswolds - Day 3

Our third day started out with a stop in Farrington, a Cotswold’s Village that isn’t touristy. I was interesting to see the difference, it terms of buildings and signage.

The second stop of the day was the Great Coxwell Barn. Coxwell was a monastic grange (farm) of Beulieu Abbey and the one surviving barn circa 1300 is a very impressive piece of Gothic carpentry.

We subsequently stopped to view the White Horse, a horse that is etched into the ground on the top of a hill acrosse the valley from Burbary Hill, an earthworks fort that we stopped at briefly.

We then stopped at a beautiful, if slightly dilapidated church, called “Church of St. John the Baptist”. It was built in the 11^th Century and had an impact on William Morris starting the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

For lunch we stopped at a barn in Filkin, which has been turned into a Wollen Mill. It was an impressive example of adaptive reuse, as it also had a shop, restaurant, studios and small museum.

In the afternoon the group split into two. The first group visited William Morris’ home of Kelmscott, enjoyed tea and scones, then switched with the second group to go on a boat ride down the themes.

Study Trip to the Cotswolds - Day 2

The second day started with a stop in Woodstock, only a short distance from Oxford. There we meet with the former mayor. After this meeting we had some free time to walk around the town and to visit the Oxfordshire Museum.

From Woodstock we headed to the Rollright Stones, one of the country’s ancient henges. We were they on the summer solstice, so there were many interesting offerings left around the circle and at the King Stone that is set by itself in a different field.

We then arrived in Moreton in Mash. Tuesday is market day, so the vendors were there selling clothes, house wares and some food.

After lunch we headed to Chipping Campden, an historic market town. “Chipping” in English town names means market. This village had a mill that has been refurbished to house retail. It also features a beautiful market structure from the 1600s.

Our last stop of the day was Stow on the Wold, which is home to England’s oldest Inn, the Royalist Hotel, in operation since 947 A.D. This village’s street follows the town square layout.

We made is back to Oxford in time to be dropped off at the Oxford Castle. The tower mound was built in 1071 by the Normans and subsequently added to. Along side the castle, the old prision has been turned into a hotel, which we walked through on our way to Evensong at Christ Church Cathedral.

The Heritage Resources Centre's Study Trip to the Cotswolds recently returned from England. The tour consisted of five days of touring the Cotswolds learning about regional tourism and planning issues in these small picturesque villages.

After arriving on Day 1 went went to the centre of Oxford, our home base for the week. Once in the core, Dr. Robert Shipley lead a walking tour of the highlights of Oxford, including: Trinity Collage, Blackwell’s Bookstore, the Bodleian Library, Ratcliffe Camera, the market and Christy Church Collage (as well as Christ Church Collage commons).

HRC Workshop: Cultural Heritage Landscapes - June 18/19

What will the workshop cover?

The term Cultural Heritage Landscape and its application is gaining momentum in Ontario. This workshop will look at the theory behind the term. The second day will be used for examining a local example to determine its significance, a process that can then be applied in participants’ towns and cities.

A Cultural Heritage Landscape is:

1. a defined geographical area

2. of heritage significance

3. which has been modified by human activities. Such an area is:

4. valued by a community

5. is of significance to the understanding of a people, or a place.

Goals of the workshop:

• To provide a second level of training in Heritage beyond the Heritage Planning Workshop

• To create awareness and understanding of the theory of Cultural Heritage Landscapes

• To provide an opportunity for the application of Cultural Heritage Landscapes

FEES:

The workshop fee for practicing planners and other concerned citizens will be $225*. This price will include lunch and snacks on both days of the workshop.

Title: Heritage Conservation District Study Assistant

Location: Heritage Resources Centre, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario (position provided by Community Heritage Ontairo)

Length: 7 weeks

Salary: $10.25/hour

Description:

The Heritage Conservation District Study Assistant will be part of a year-long, Province-wide study of Heritage Conservation Districts. Their specific role will be working with Community Heritage Ontario and the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario to aid in the establishment of a Heritage Conservation District Network, including the development of a website. The candidate will also have the opportunity to undertake primary data collection, which they will record and analyze. They will also be involved in organizational elements of the project.

Tasks:

- Working with Community Heritage Ontario and the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario to aid in the establishment of terms of reference for a Heritage Conservation District Network

- Development of a Heritage Conservation District website

- Participate in various elements of a large-scale research project, including primary data collection, and recording and analyzing the data from at least one of the 32 locations being studied

Qualifications:

- Interest in heritage, history or planning as demonstrated by education in these or a related field

- Demonstrated ability to develop websites

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Ability to carry about multiple tasks or projects

We will learn how to identify a wide variety of styles and distinguish which features (character-defining elements) are important to each style. Using our gained knowledge we will examine one of Oakville’s neighbourhoods to determine the local styles, as well as use examples from participant’s own neighbourhoods.

Mark’s recent conservation concepts applied to his original Master Plan for heritage-sensitive revitalization of the Victoria and Chaudière Islands District (the basis of the NCC’s vision plan for this area) will be illustrated as an example of a new paradigm for National Capital waterfronts, within the context of the wider cultural heritage of water.
The Ottawa Curling Club was constructed in 1916 and the club itself has a history going back to the time of Confederation. Guests will be able to wander about and admire the largely original interior, the many historic photographs on the walls and extensive trophy collection.
