The ANNUAL HERITAGE SHOWCASE hosted by the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation will be taking place on Saturday February 18, 2012 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener. As in the past, the North Waterloo Region Branch of ACO will be participating with a display. If other years are any indication, there will be over 35 local heritage/history organizations involved in this event. You are invited to visit the Mall to view the displays, chat with your heritage friends, and (maybe) to shop.

An “ACO on the Go” Living History Event


Sunday October 23rd 2011 – 10am-3:30pm


Back by popular demand, the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario – Clarington Branch (ACO Clarington) is pleased to provide an opportunity to go back in time and hear the stories of life in the Prisoner of War Camp 30. The 75 minute tour will be lead by a “Camp 30 expert” and will include stops at various buildings to watch vignettes performed by talented re-enactors portraying the different aspects of Camp 30 life.


The event is a fundraiser for the formation of a foundation to preserve Camp 30, Canada’s last remaining intact POW camp. Money raised from the tickets sales and merchandise purchases will go towards creating a business case study in an effort to attract businesses to the site.


Tickets will be available by walk-in at the Clarington Museums and Archives – Sarah Jane Williams Heritage Centre (62 Temperance St. Bowmanville) or by phone at (905)-623-2734. Tickets cost $15.00 for adults and $10 for children and seniors. Tours start at 10 AM and run throughout the day. CALL NOW to book your spot for this exciting journey back into time.

Goderich’s Main Square and West Street are Heritage Conservation Districts, and they have another 23 properties that are designated. Over 60 properties have been listed as significant sites, and the Goderich Harbour has been identified as a potential Cultural Heritage Landscape. Goderich is dubbed “Canada’s Prettiest Town” but due to the recent tornado much of the built heritage that contributes to that name is in danger. The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario is raising funds to help save Goderich’s heritage buildings. The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario is currently figuring out what our response should be, starting with raising funds to help the town, providing expert heritage consulting services through our Preservation Works program and other actions. All funds raised in this campaign will be directed to Goderich activities and assistance. Built Heritage Conservation Assistant - seven-week position

The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario is seeking a Built Heritage Conservation Assistant for a seven-week position funded by the Provincial Government under the Summer Experience Program.  Applicants must be currently enrolled in a secondary, or post-secondary institution or within six months of graduation and have reached the age of 15 and not yet reached the age of 25 upon commencement of employment or up to 29 years for persons with a disability as defined under the Ontario Human Rights Code. Applicants must be residents of Ontario and eligible to work in Canada.

ACO Survey

The ACO has been trying a number of initiatives to attract a new generation of heritage activists, and would prefer to do it without losing great swathes of historic buildings like we did last year. Kayla Jonas of the committee writes:

Warren loves local history and heritage, which is evident by his many speaking engagements and his popular shunpiking tours. Also, he has a great fondness for mill, and was commissioned by the Grand River Conservation Authority to undertake an inventory of mills in the Grand driver Watershed. He claims (and rightly so) that mills were the first major industrial component of a community and discovered that 10 mills are currently open to the public (can you think of 5?); 23 are privately owned, and 9 are preserved as ruins.

Every member is invited to hear Warren speak about these important heritage sites.

And please bring a friend.

Retrofiting buildings reqires a Neighbourhood Approch

ACORN In a Nutshell, the newsletter of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, always has interesting, up to date articles and quotes. Here is one such article:

Matt Cole of the Neigbourhood Housing Services of Chicago wrote an article in Remodelling magazine that is worth reading in its entirety, but I thought he made a very important point about the importance of neighbourhoods that should be highlighted:

"Here is the ugly reality: None of our efforts to preserve and retrofit vintage buildings will be sustainable if we don't find ways to stop working on an ad-hoc, building-by-building basis We need to move upscale and start focusing on blocks of homes, distinct districts, or even entire neighborhoods. This is likely the only way we will lower project costs, develop affordable financing mechanisms, broaden resident outreach, and encourage better contractor training, etc. "

Ontario Heritage Conference 2011 Will be Held in Cobourg

The Ontario Heritage Conference for 2011 will be held in Cobourg from June 3 to June 5. The topic will be "Creating the Will".

The conference proceedings will be held in the lovely Victoria Hall

The Key Note Speaker will be Terry O'Reilly from the CBC's Age for Persuasion.

The conference's website is already active and will be updated as information becomes available.

Revealed at the Ontario Heritage Conference: This Place Matters

Lloyd Alter, President of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario introduced this tool at the Ontario Heritage Conference.

In his recent newsletter he wrote about the new interactive website:

We need to know what is out there. Nobody knows; until a building gets listed, there is no database that says it is important. It is a catch 22; in Brantford, they can say with a straight face that the buildings are not historic because they have never been listed, but they refused to take the advice of the Heritage Committee and list the buildings. This is happening all over Ontario; We are losing too many buildings not only because nobody is watching, but because nobody knows what to watch, and municipal councils are doing their best to ensure we never do.

We have been working on this since I wrote this for Acorn; I was going to show this in Chatham at the convention this weekend but will drop it here. We are developing an early warning system, a crowd-sourced real time database where people across the province can let everyone know about buildings at risk, under threat, that they think other people should know about. It is based on an open source system developed in Kenya during violence a few years ago and has been used for disasters around the world since; we are applying it to heritage disasters in Ontario. Soon you will be able to point your blackberry or iPhone at a building and add it to the database; in this very early alpha version you need your computer. Try it out at thisplacematters.ca

In 1974, Sue Wilson, one of ACO London’s original members, dared to dream on a large scale, gathering a team to plan the first Geranium Walk to raise funds for the then relatively new branch. It was an ambitious undertaking with a Tour A in the Eldon House area and a Tour B in the Woodfield District. Victorian Fancies

was a resounding success..

On Sunday, June 6, 2010 the 37th annual Geranium Heritage House Tour, Eldon Excursion, will take place in the neighbourhood of one of London’s oldest buildings, Eldon House.

The tour begins at Eldon House Interpretive Centre, adjacent to London’s oldest residence, Eldon House, built in 1834 by John Harris. The ACO London Region Branch is joining the 175th anniversary celebration of this venerable old building. Eldon Excursion will visit homes and businesses on the streets that were once London’s premier neighbourhood - Ridout, Talbot, John, Albert and Kent. Homeowners on our tour have restored many of these architectural gems to highlight the craftsmanship of past generations. Each building on the tour is marked by a pot of red geraniums, courtesy of Van Horik’s Greenhouses.

The $20.00 admission cost includes refreshments at the end of the walk and admittance to Eldon House as well as the buildings on the tour. Tickets can be purchased in advance beginning May 1 until June 4 at Gammage Flowers, Market Crafts, Oxford Book Store, Tuckey Home Hardware, Jill’s Table or Van Horik’s Greenhouses. On Sunday, June 6 tickets can be purchased at the Eldon House Interpretive Centre on Ridout Street.

Free Parking is available at the Impark parking lot at Ridout and Queens.
