This workshop will cover the basics, including what a Heritage Conservation District is and the steps necessary to develop one. We will use examples from around the Province to discuss best practices used for implementation and monitoring. Drawing on the experience of a local HCD, we will examine potential changes to districts and how to manage them. Part of this workshop will be a hands-on group activity that will allow participants to develop practical, real world knowledge.

The workshop fee for practicing planners and other concerned citizens will be $225.This price will include lunch and snacks on both days of the workshop.

Architectural Styles Workshop

Dates: April 14^th & 15^th, 2012

This workshop will focus on Ontario’s architectural styles. We will learn how to identify a wide variety of styles and distinguish which features (character-defining elements) are important to each style. Using our gained knowledge we will examine one of Oakville’s neighbourhoods to determine the local styles, as well as use examples from participant’s own neighbourhoods.

This weekend just wrapped up our workshops for 2011. In total we offered five workshops this year around the province: Heritage Conservation Districts in Waterloo, Energy & Heritage Buildings in  Kitchener,  Architectural Styles  in Oakville, Cultural Heritage Landscapes in  Prince Edward County, and our 4 Day Heritage Planning Workshop  in Kingston. 


We are looking to 2012 and would like to announce our first workshops of the new year!

ERA Architects, in cooperation with Historic Restoration Inc., is hosting one and two day workshops for Heritage Professionals and Masons, titled Lime Mortars for Traditionally Constructed Brickwork, lead by Dr. Gerard Lynch.


Dr. Lynch is an internationally acclaimed and highly respected historic brickwork consultant, master bricklayer, educator and author, considered the world’s leading authority of gauge brickwork, and affectionately known by the historic term, ‘The Red Mason.’

HRC Workshop: Cultural Heritage Landscapes - June 18/19

Dates: June 18th & 19th, 2011 

Times: 10am - 4pm

Location: Regent Theatre, Picton (224 Main Street)

What will the workshop cover?

The term Cultural Heritage Landscape and its application is gaining momentum in Ontario. This workshop will look at the theory behind the term. The second day will be used for examining a local example to determine its significance, a process that can then be applied in participants’ towns and cities.

A Cultural Heritage Landscape is:

1. a defined geographical area

 2. of heritage significance 

3. which has been modified by human activities. Such an area is: 

4. valued by a community 

5. is of significance to the understanding of a people, or a place.

Goals of the workshop:

• To provide a second level of training in Heritage beyond the Heritage Planning Workshop

• To create awareness and understanding of the theory of Cultural Heritage Landscapes

• To provide an opportunity for the application of Cultural Heritage Landscapes

FEES:

The workshop fee for practicing planners and other concerned citizens will be $225*. This price will include lunch and snacks on both days of the workshop.

CHO:Municipal Heritage Committee Orientation Workshop 2011

Municipal Heritage Committees (MHCs) are central to local heritage programs. This workshop is designed for municipal staff, Councillors, and heritage committee members. Through this workshop, participants will learn about establishing, operating and sustaining their committees; the conservation context in Ontario; the process of designation under the Ontario Heritage Act; and municipal heritage committee best practices.

There will be three workshops held across Ontario.

Energy and Heritage Buildings Workshop - April 2/3

DATES: April 2nd & 3rd, 2011

TIMES: 10am - 4pm

LOCATION: REEP House, Kitchener

PROGRAM:

A spirited debate has been raging around

whether older buildings are energy gluttons,

costing huge amounts of money to heat, or

whether they are the poster children for

conservation. Vinyl window salesmen prowl the

streets selling their wares on the promise of fuel

bill savings and freedom from maintenance

forever. Building contractors tell us that new

buildings with LEED certificates of various

colours will help us save the planet from global

warming.

This workshop addresses many of the myths

and polemics with solid research evidence

designed to clear the fog and assist

homeowners to make intelligent and informed

decisions. The workshop will take place in a

century-old building, which for $50,000 worth of

upgrading achieved a 60% reduction in energy

operating cost. Find out how it was done and

work on exercises to calculate the actual costs

of being part of a more sustainable future.

Heritage Planning Workshop in Hamilton- Day 2 Pictures

Our second day of the workshop consisted of an overview of the Ontario Heritage Act, and a hands on exercise for writing Statements of Significance and By-laws. We also had a guest speaker. The curator of the Hamilton Steam and Technology Museum (a National Historic Site) spoke about Commemorative Integrity Statements and took us on a private behind the scenes tour to show us some of the significant elements of the site.

In the first day of our Heritage Planning workshop we discussed different definitions of heritage, introduced ourselves and our interest in the topic, looked at the international context as well as had a visual presentation of some international heritage themes.

HRC Trip to the UK - Summer 2011

Heritage Resources Centre’s

Study Trip to the Cotswolds, UK

Summer 2011

This area of England is known for its scenic villages, historic architecture and as a Regional Destination for Heritage Tourism. We will learn from local people about how the small towns and villages promote themselves cooperatively and attract tourists. We will meet local tourism officials, site operators, entrepreneurs and cultural experts.

We are planning the trip for Summer 2011 (date to be determined). The estimated cost will be $2000. This includes flight, five days of guided tours and accommodation. Deposits will be due in March 2011.
